Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2011 on the Glossa label, this recording showcases the virtuosic theorbo playing of José Miguel Moreno, a renowned specialist in historical plucked string instruments. The album focuses on the French repertoire for the theorbo, a large, long-necked lute popular in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, known for its deep, resonant bass strings and distinctive expressive capabilities.

Moreno, often praised for his meticulous research and period-informed performance style, curated this selection to highlight the subtle ornamentation and harmonic richness characteristic of the French Baroque. The project fits within Glossa’s mission of documenting historically informed performance practice, offering listeners an intimate exploration of the instrument's delicate, introspective soundscapes as interpreted by a master of the craft.
