Where it came from
Released in 2009 by the Spanish label Glossa, this recording features the theorbo music of Robert de Visée, a composer and lutenist who served in the court of Louis XIV. The album was conceived as a scholarly and artistic endeavor to highlight the expressive, intimate potential of the theorbo, a large lute with extended bass strings that was central to the French Baroque aesthetic.
The performance by José Miguel Moreno is widely praised for its technical precision and sensitivity to the period's stylistic nuances. Moreno, an expert in historical plucked instruments, aimed to evoke the refined atmosphere of the Sun King’s chambers. The album is regarded as a definitive reference for this repertoire, balancing rigorous historical research with a contemplative, atmospheric sound that captures the elegance of seventeenth-century French music.
