Where it came from
Released by the Spanish label Glossa in 2000, this recording of Antoine Forqueray’s Pièces de viole represents a milestone in the historical performance movement. Forqueray was a legendary 18th-century virtuoso whose compositions are celebrated for their immense technical difficulty and expressive depth, often described as having the intensity of the devil compared to the angelic qualities of his contemporary, Marin Marais.
The album features a distinguished ensemble led by Paolo Pandolfo, a preeminent figure in the revival of the viola da gamba. Working alongside collaborators like Rolf Lislevand and Guido Balestracci, Pandolfo sought to capture the visceral, theatrical spirit of French Baroque music. The release was met with widespread critical acclaim for its nuanced articulation and its success in elevating Forqueray's intricate, challenging scores into a cohesive and evocative listening experience.
