Profetas y Frenéticos

Released in 1991 on the Alerce label, this self-titled album marked the debut of the Chilean band Profetas y Frenéticos, a project led by Claudio Narea shortly after his high-profile departure from the legendary rock group Los Prisioneros. The record emerged during a period of transition in the Chilean music scene, as artists navigated the cultural shift following the end of the military dictatorship. Narea sought to distance his sound from the synth-pop experimentation of his previous work, opting for a rootsier, rockabilly-influenced aesthetic that emphasized electric guitars and a more organic, retro production style.

The album is widely regarded as an expression of Narea’s desire to explore his personal musical influences, such as rock and roll from the 1950s and 60s, rather than the politically charged post-punk he was known for. While it did not reach the commercial heights of his former band, the album serves as a historical document of an artist re-establishing his creative identity. Critics at the time noted the sincerity of the project, often framing the record as a necessary, if stylistically narrow, step in Narea’s career that highlighted his commitment to traditional rock songcraft.
