Quatuors À Cordes Nº 5 & Nº 6

Released in 2015 by the French label Peyrole Records, this recording features the Quatuor Elysée performing the fifth and sixth string quartets by Louis Théodore Gouvy. Gouvy was a French-German composer who spent much of his life in the Saarland region, occupying a unique position as a bridge between the Romantic traditions of his contemporaries and the structured classicism of the Germanic school.

The Quatuor Elysée, an ensemble known for its dedication to rediscovering neglected works, provides a modern interpretation that highlights Gouvy’s masterful grasp of chamber music textures. The design and production of this album were aimed at bringing attention to a composer who was highly celebrated during his lifetime in the late 19th century but largely overlooked in the post-war repertoire, receiving positive critical reception for its scholarly contribution to the string quartet canon.
