Where it came from
Released in 1991 on the Decca label, this compilation explores the transition between the syncopated ragtime era and the structured elegance of the Brazilian tango. The collection serves as an anthology of early 20th-century American and Latin keyboard compositions, curated to showcase the stylistic intersection of North American rags by Joseph F. Lamb and James Scott alongside the evocative piano works of Ernesto Nazareth.
The album features performances by Joshua Rifkin, an American musicologist and pianist who played a pivotal role in the 1970s ragtime revival. His interpretations were celebrated for their refined, scholarly approach, moving away from the frenetic, sped-up renditions common in earlier decades in favor of a measured, thoughtful cadence that highlighted the melodic sophistication of the source material.
