Schwanensee / Dornröschen / Der Nußknacker (Ballettsuiten)

This collection represents a selection of Tchaikovsky's most beloved ballet suites, featuring the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra led by Zubin Mehta and the National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Richard Bonynge. Issued on the Decca label, this release serves as a compilation of high-fidelity recordings that highlight the label's reputation for technical excellence in orchestral production during the analog and early digital transition period.

The recording pairs Zubin Mehta’s approach to the dramatic sweep of Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty with Richard Bonynge’s renowned expertise in the ballet repertoire, particularly his refined interpretation of The Nutcracker. Decca’s production team sought to balance the clarity of the instrumental textures with the lush, romantic emotionalism inherent in Tchaikovsky’s writing, resulting in a set that has remained a standard reference for listeners exploring these quintessential nineteenth-century works.
