Where it came from
The Reiner Rarities collection, released by Pristine Audio in 2010, serves as a curated retrospective of conductor Fritz Reiner’s earlier broadcast and studio recordings. Produced during a period of renewed interest in mid-century classical archives, the set was designed to preserve and revitalize historically significant performances that had long suffered from inferior sound quality in previous pressings.
Andrew Rose, the founder of Pristine Audio, spearheaded the restoration process using proprietary XR (Ambient Stereo) remastering technology. By carefully managing the spectral balance and spatial characteristics of the original monaural tapes, Rose aimed to provide listeners with a more immersive and faithful representation of Reiner’s rigorous conducting style. The release was generally well-received by classical music enthusiasts and critics for its ability to rescue technically limited vintage recordings, offering a clearer window into the legendary work Reiner achieved with various orchestras before his definitive tenure in Chicago.
