Reinhold Friedrich

This 1989 release on the Ram label captures the virtuosic output of German trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich alongside the Norddeutsche Solisten. Recorded during a period when historically informed performance practices were gaining significant traction in European classical circles, the collection highlights a repertoire of Baroque and Classical concertos that demand both technical precision and a nuanced understanding of period phrasing. The album serves as a definitive showcase of Friedrich’s ability to navigate the demanding clarino register, establishing his reputation as one of the preeminent trumpet soloists of his generation.

The album’s design reflects the minimalist aesthetic favored by independent European classical labels of the late eighties, prioritizing clarity and the performer's presence. By pairing Friedrich’s refined approach with the Norddeutsche Solisten, the production aimed to bridge the gap between academic rigor and accessible concert performance. Upon its release, it was received as a technically formidable contribution to the trumpet repertoire, praised for the crisp, articulate dialogue between the solo instrument and the ensemble that helped define the label's identity during its formative years.
