Where it came from
Released in 2018 under the Deutsche Grammophon label, this album serves as a heartfelt tribute by French-Italian tenor Roberto Alagna to the legendary Spanish-born French singer and actor Luis Mariano. Alagna, who has long been celebrated for his command of the operatic repertoire, chose to revisit these classic operetta hits to honor the cultural icon who defined the French musical landscape of the 1940s and 1950s. The project reflects a desire to bridge the gap between classical vocal training and the lighter, sentimental appeal of the operetta tradition that Mariano mastered.
The album features lush orchestral arrangements designed to capture the nostalgia and romanticism associated with Mariano’s mid-century hits. Alagna’s approach was noted for its warmth and technical precision, aiming to revive the elegance of the original recordings while imbuing them with his distinct tenor color. Upon its release, the collection was generally received as a respectful and nostalgic homage, appealing both to Alagna’s established classical fan base and to listeners with an affinity for the golden age of French variety theater.
