Saint-Saëns: Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso • Havanaise • Sarasate: Carmen-Fantasy • Chausson: Poème • Ravel: Tzigane

This 2012 Deutsche Grammophon release compiles iconic performances of virtuosic violin showpieces, originally recorded during the late 1980s. The album showcases Itzhak Perlman’s collaborations with Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic, a partnership celebrated for its technical precision and emotional depth. These works, ranging from Saint-Saëns’ brilliant Rondo Capriccioso to Ravel’s atmospheric Tzigane, represent the pinnacle of the 19th and early 20th-century violin repertoire, demanding exceptional dexterity and nuanced phrasing from the soloist.

The album serves as a remastered retrospective of Perlman’s definitive interpretations, which were first captured during a period when he was firmly established as the preeminent violinist of his generation. Deutsche Grammophon curated this collection to highlight the seamless synthesis between Perlman’s idiosyncratic tone—often described as warm and robust—and the lush, symphonic support of the New York Philharmonic. Upon their initial release and subsequent compilation, these recordings were widely praised by critics for maintaining a balance between rigorous classical discipline and the dramatic flair required by these technically demanding compositions.
