'S Continental

Released in 1962, 'S Continental was a quintessential product of Ray Conniff's mid-century tenure with Columbia Records. At a time when high-fidelity stereo recordings were becoming the standard for home listening, Conniff built his reputation on a lush, meticulously layered sound that blended wordless vocal choruses with tight instrumental arrangements. This album, part of his popular series of travel-themed records, was designed to evoke a sophisticated, cosmopolitan atmosphere for the suburban living room, capturing the zeitgeist of easy-listening pop during the early 1960s.

The album's success relied heavily on Conniff’s distinctive technique of using the human voice as an orchestral instrument, often doubling the melodic lines of the brass or woodwinds to create a smooth, rhythmic texture. The arrangements were crafted to be approachable yet technically precise, reflecting the high production standards Columbia applied to its mid-range catalog at the time. While critics of the era sometimes dismissed the genre as background music, the album remains a recognized example of the meticulous craftsmanship that defined the golden age of American big-band-inspired pop.
