Provenance

Where it came from

The Swan Hennessy String Quartets 1–4 collection was released in 2019 by RTÉ lyric fm, featuring the RTÉ Contempo Quartet. Swan Hennessy was an Irish-born composer who spent much of his life in France, deeply influenced by the Celtic Revival and his interactions with the Parisian avant-garde of the early 20th century. His work bridges the gap between traditional Irish melodic structures and contemporary harmonic palettes, reflecting a cosmopolitan yet distinctively Hibernian sensibility.

The recording project was spearheaded by the RTÉ Contempo Quartet to shine a light on Hennessy’s largely overlooked chamber music output. By commissioning these performances, the label aimed to formalize Hennessy’s legacy within the canon of Irish classical composition. The set is noted for its technical precision and the ensemble's dedication to capturing the rhythmic vitality and atmospheric texture characteristic of Hennessy's writing style, earning favorable recognition from musicologists interested in neglected European composers of the interwar period.
