Where it came from
System Rivièra was released in 2005 on the French label Le Maquis, serving as the debut studio album for the project Neon Electronics. The album emerged from the creative output of Belgian musician Maurice Engelen, better known for his work with Praga Khan, who adopted this moniker to explore a colder, more minimalist aesthetic influenced by the early industrial and new beat movements of the 1980s.
The album's design and sound were intended as a deliberate departure from contemporary electronic dance trends, focusing instead on synthetic textures and a cinematic, brooding atmosphere. It was received by critics as a successful homage to the darker corners of electronic music history, noted for its rhythmic precision and the stark, detached quality of the production that characterized the label's ethos during that period.
