Where it came from
The Benoit/Freeman Project 2, released in 1999 on the Peak Records label, serves as the second collaborative studio effort between contemporary jazz stalwarts David Benoit and Russ Freeman. Following the success of their initial 1994 partnership, this album was conceived to capitalize on the pair's combined influence within the smooth jazz genre, blending Benoit’s melodic, piano-driven sensibilities with Freeman’s polished, guitar-focused production style as the founder of The Rippingtons.
The design of the album reflects the professional, polished aesthetic characteristic of the late nineties adult contemporary and smooth jazz landscape. It features tight arrangements and session work intended for radio-friendly accessibility. Upon its release, the project was generally well-received by fans of the genre, appreciated for the synergistic chemistry between two of the most prominent instrumentalists of the era, who managed to balance their distinct musical voices within a highly structured and melodic framework.
