Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1996 by Geffen Records, this compilation serves as a retrospective of Jennifer Holliday's tenure with the label. It was assembled to capture the highlights of her mid-80s recording career, a period marked by her transition from Broadway stardom in 'Dreamgirls' to a successful solo career in R&B and dance music. The collection features her signature powerhouse vocal performances, drawing heavily from the material that established her as one of the most formidable voices of the era.

The album reflects the aesthetic of mid-90s greatest hits packages, which sought to reintroduce legacy soul and pop artists to contemporary audiences during the height of the CD era. By compiling tracks like 'And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going' alongside her club-oriented Geffen singles, the label aimed to showcase the versatility of her catalog. It remains a definitive document of her most commercially active recording years, capturing the dramatic, emotive style that defined her signature sound.
