Where it came from
Released in 2000 under the El Inspector De La Salsa label, this compilation serves as a retrospective of Juan Formell y Los Van Van, the preeminent Cuban dance band founded in 1969. The collection brings together the essential tracks that define the band's evolution from the revolutionary songo rhythm—a sophisticated fusion of son montuno, jazz, and funk—to their sustained dominance in international salsa and timba music throughout the late twentieth century.
The album reflects Formell's role as both a master bassist and a shrewd social observer whose lyrics captured the nuances of daily life in Havana. By curating this selection, the label aimed to provide a definitive introduction to a discography that helped modernize Cuban music. Critical reception consistently highlights Formell's innovative arrangements and the band's unparalleled influence in bridging the gap between traditional Cuban roots and modern global dance floor sensibilities.
