Where it came from
Released by Stax Records, this compilation serves as a definitive anthology of the Memphis soul legend's peak years at the label. Rufus Thomas, often called the Godfather of Funk, was instrumental in shaping the Stax sound through the late 1960s and early 1970s, moving beyond his early R&B roots into rhythmic, dance-oriented tracks that captured the vibrant energy of the era. The collection was curated to gather his chart-topping novelty funk hits, which were central to the label's identity during its most influential decade.
The design of this release reflects the quintessential aesthetic of the Stax archival series, prioritizing the raw charisma of the artist through iconic promotional imagery. By focusing on his singles, the record captures a transition in music history where the tight, horn-driven arrangements of soul began to embrace the funk grooves that would define the next generation of black music. Critics and music historians have long regarded the collection as an essential document of Southern soul, highlighting Thomas's unique ability to blend humor and showmanship with sophisticated studio production.
