The Bruce Springsteen Story Vol.4: 1971/ 72 - Steel Mill & The Bruce Springsteen Band

The Bruce Springsteen Story series, released on the E. St. Records label in the mid-1990s, represents a significant chapter in the world of unauthorized bootleg recordings. This specific volume, covering the 1971 and 1972 period, captures a transitional era in Springsteen's career, documenting his work with the hard rock outfit Steel Mill and the short-lived Bruce Springsteen Band. During this time, Springsteen was refining his songwriting and stage presence, moving away from the heavier rock leanings of his previous bands toward the folk-influenced storytelling that would define his early studio albums.

The production quality of such unofficial compilations varies, reflecting their source material, which typically includes studio outtakes, demos, and live soundboard recordings circulating among the devoted Springsteen collector community. Designed to provide fans with a chronological look at his pre-fame development, these discs were created to satisfy the high demand for historical artifacts that official label releases had not yet addressed. While these recordings lack the polish of major studio releases, they remain highly regarded by historians and enthusiasts for their raw documentation of an artist finding his signature sound.
