The Music Of George Frederick McKay

Released by Orchid Classics in early 2025, this recording project serves as a focused exploration of the chamber music of George Frederick McKay, a prolific 20th-century American composer deeply influenced by the Pacific Northwest. McKay spent much of his career teaching at the University of Washington, where he fostered a distinctively American musical identity characterized by folk-inspired melodies and rugged, pastoral textures that stood apart from the more common avant-garde trends of his era.

The album features the Formosa Quartet, an ensemble recognized for their technical precision and dedication to championing lesser-known repertoire. By reviving McKay's string quartets and chamber works, the quartet aimed to integrate his historically significant compositions into the modern concert canon. The release was met with appreciation from critics and scholars who noted the ensemble's ability to capture the specific melodic warmth and rhythmic vitality intrinsic to McKay's unique compositional voice.
