Where it came from
Released in 1990 by DRG Records, this tribute album was a poignant labor of love by jazz vocalist Sylvia Syms, who shared a long-standing personal and professional friendship with the legendary pianist Bill Evans. Produced a decade after Evans' passing in 1980, the record serves as both a musical homage to his complex harmonic language and a showcase for Syms' interpretive gifts as a jazz storyteller.
The album features arrangements that highlight the lyrical quality of Evans' compositions, which were often adapted from the Great American Songbook. Syms, known for her impeccable phrasing and intimate vocal style, chose a repertoire that underscored Evans' influence on the vocal jazz tradition. Upon its release, the record was well-received by critics who praised the synergy between Syms' emotive delivery and the nuanced, minimalist accompaniment that echoes the spirit of the Evans trio's aesthetic.
