Where it came from
Released by the archival label Homophone in 2004, The Muse Surmounted serves as a comprehensive historical anthology documenting the peculiar phenomenon of Florence Foster Jenkins alongside a selection of her contemporaries. The compilation was curated to explore the intersection of genuine musical ambition and a profound lack of technical proficiency, capturing the camp appeal that defined the 'outsider' vocalists of the early 20th century.
The album design reflects a deliberate aesthetic of vintage kitsch, utilizing archival photographs and period-appropriate typography to ground the listener in the vaudeville and high-society parlor eras of the 1920s and 1930s. Critics and music historians have generally received the release as an essential, if irreverent, companion piece to the study of musical subcultures, noting that it provides necessary context for Jenkins’s rise to cult status in the years following her performance at Carnegie Hall.
