Where it came from
Released in 2001 by Dorian Recordings, this album features the second volume of Salomone Rossi's 'The Songs of Solomon,' a landmark collection of polyphonic choral music. Rossi, an Italian Jewish composer living in the early 17th century, broke significant ground by applying contemporary Venetian stylistic innovations to Hebrew liturgical texts, creating a bridge between Renaissance choral tradition and Jewish worship music.
This recording was performed by The New York Baroque Ensemble under the direction of Eric Milnes. The ensemble aimed to capture the intricate, multi-voice textures of Rossi’s compositions, which were originally published in Venice in 1622. The project was praised for its scholarly approach to early music performance practice, offering a rare window into the sophisticated musical life of the Jewish community in Mantua during the late Renaissance.
