The Tan T ien

The Tan T ien was released in 1998 on the FMR label, representing a significant collaboration between saxophonist Martin Speake and pianist Nikki Iles. The album emerged from the fertile British jazz scene of the late nineties, capturing a period where Speake was increasingly focusing on original compositions and intimate, duo-focused interplay. The project sought to highlight the fluid musical chemistry between the two artists, stripping away complex arrangements to favor a conversation-based approach to improvisation.

The album's design and thematic direction reflect the introspective nature of the duo’s work, with the title referencing concepts related to energy centers often found in Eastern philosophy. The release was well-regarded among critics for its lyrical quality and the sensitive, nuanced piano accompaniment provided by Iles, which complemented Speake’s characteristic warm, dry tone on the alto saxophone. It serves as a quintessential example of the chamber-jazz aesthetic fostered by independent labels like FMR during that era.
