Provenance

Where it came from

Reinhard Keiser’s Markuspassion, composed in the early 18th century, stands as a significant contribution to the Hamburg school of sacred music. Keiser was the most prominent opera composer in Germany during his lifetime, and he infused his passion settings with a dramatic, melodic intensity that bridge the gap between late Baroque oratorio and the theatricality of the stage. The work was long overshadowed by the later passions of J.S. Bach, who actually held Keiser's work in high regard and studied it closely.

This 2015 recording on the Mirare label brings together the Ensemble Jacques Moderne and Gli Incogniti under the direction of Joël Suhubiette. The production was critically noted for its effort to restore the vibrant, operatic color of Keiser’s original score, moving away from the more somber, penitential traditions that had dominated performances of the work in the 20th century. By employing historically informed performance practices, the ensemble aimed to reclaim the emotional immediacy and structural elegance that made Keiser a dominant force in German music in the 1700s.
