Where it came from
Théophanie is a recording of liturgical music performed by the monks of the Benedictine Monastery of Chevetogne in Belgium. Established in 1939, the monastery is uniquely dedicated to the cause of Christian unity, maintaining both the Roman Rite and the Byzantine Rite. This album serves as a sonic representation of their commitment to Eastern Christian liturgical traditions, captured within the acoustic environment of their abbey church.
The recording reflects the monastery's ongoing efforts to preserve and share Byzantine chant, a practice they have honed for decades as a bridge between Western and Eastern ecclesiastical life. By releasing these works on their own label, the community ensures that the integrity of the performance remains tied to their specific monastic rhythm and liturgical cycle. It is regarded by collectors of religious music as an authentic document of contemporary monastic life rather than a standard commercial production.
