Provenance

Where it came from

Traumnoten was released in 1993 on the Intersound label, marking a late-career entry in the extensive discography of the Romanian jazz pianist Eugen Cicero. The album serves as a sophisticated example of the easy listening and orchestral jazz crossover style that Cicero mastered throughout his tenure in Germany, pairing his fluid, classically-inflected piano improvisation with the lush, structured arrangements of the RIAS Tanzorchester under the direction of conductor Rüdiger Piesker.

The album reflects the tradition of European radio-orchestra collaborations that defined the mid-20th-century middle-of-the-road sound. Piesker, a staple of the German orchestral scene, provides a velvet backdrop that highlights Cicero’s ability to bridge the gap between jazz virtuosity and pop sensibilities. The project was intended to reach a broad audience seeking refined, atmospheric arrangements, and it stands as a testament to the technical precision that both the soloist and the ensemble maintained well into the nineties.
