Trios For Piano, Flute, & Cello

This collection represents a mid-to-late 20th-century exploration of the chamber music repertoire for piano, flute, and cello. Produced by the Arpège label, the recording features the HD-Trio—comprised of flutist Christoph Haarmann, cellist Otmar Zwiebelhofer, and pianist Bernhard Maier—performing works by classical and romantic composers Joseph Haydn, Carl Maria von Weber, and Johann Nepomuk Hummel. The project aimed to showcase the distinct timbral interplay between these three instruments across different musical eras, highlighting both the structural precision of Haydn and the more virtuosic, decorative elements typical of Weber and Hummel.

The Arpège label, known for its focus on classical chamber music recordings, prioritized a naturalistic acoustic capture intended to replicate the intimacy of a small-ensemble performance. The design and production of this CD reflect a period when high-fidelity European label imprints were dedicated to preserving traditional interpretations of the chamber canon. By bringing together works that span the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the HD-Trio provided listeners with a cross-sectional view of the development of the piano trio, a configuration that allowed these performers to highlight the evolving technical demands placed upon instrumentalists during the transition from the Classical to the Romantic period.
