Where it came from
Released in 1999 by Urtext Digital Classics, 'Tropical y cosmopolita' serves as a definitive exploration of the piano works of Manuel M. Ponce, a central figure in 20th-century Mexican music. The album was conceived to showcase the dichotomy in Ponce’s compositional style, contrasting his nationalist, folk-inspired pieces with his more impressionistic, European-influenced works, effectively framing him as a bridge between tradition and modernism.
The recording features the renowned pianist Edison Quintana, whose intimate understanding of the Latin American repertoire brought a lyrical precision to these performances. Urtext Digital Classics, an independent Mexican label dedicated to the preservation of classical and contemporary music from the region, oversaw the production with an emphasis on acoustic fidelity. The collection has been received as a foundational reference for those seeking to understand the evolution of the Mexican piano canon.
