Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2004 on the BVHAAST label, this CD features the incidental music composed by Dutch jazz musician and bandleader Willem Breuker for two landmark plays by Bertolt Brecht. Breuker, a central figure in the European free jazz scene and the founder of the Willem Breuker Kollektief, was renowned for his theatrical approach to music, which made his collaboration with Brechtian drama a natural artistic fit. The recording captures the energetic, avant-garde sensibilities that characterized Breuker’s work during the latter part of his career, blending formal jazz composition with the biting, satirical spirit of Brecht’s plays.

The album serves as a testament to Breuker's deep engagement with German political theater. By scoring music for 'Drums in the Night' and 'The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui', Breuker aimed to echo the cabaret-influenced soundscapes of the Weimar era while infusing them with his own distinctive improvisational style. Upon its release, the project was received as a significant archival contribution to the intersection of jazz and theater, highlighting Breuker's ability to maintain the dramatic tension required for stage performance while ensuring the music remained compelling as a standalone listening experience.
