Tumi Cuba Explosion (The Best Of Juan Formell Y Los Van Van)

Released in 1996 by the British independent label Tumi Music, Cuba Explosion serves as a definitive retrospective of Juan Formell and Los Van Van. The compilation was curated to introduce international audiences to the group’s signature sound, known as songo, a revolutionary blend of traditional Cuban son and jazz, funk, and rock elements. By the mid-1990s, Los Van Van had already cemented their status as Cuba's most influential dance band, and this release played a significant role in capitalizing on the global resurgence of interest in Cuban popular music.

The album art and overall packaging reflect the label's commitment to presenting Cuban music to a global market with a sophisticated, professional aesthetic. Tumi Music, founded by Mo Fini, focused on high-fidelity recordings and thoughtful curation, aiming to bridge the gap between regional Cuban dance halls and the international world music scene. Critical reception of the collection highlighted its role as a necessary primer, effectively chronicling the band's evolution from the early 1970s through their modern innovations, and helping to secure the group's legacy as a cornerstone of contemporary Afro-Cuban music.
