Provenance

Where it came from

Released by Fazer Records in 2000, 'Tuo Aika Toukokuun - Levytyksiä Vuosilta 1951–1979' serves as a comprehensive retrospective of the career of Tapio Rautavaara, a central figure in Finnish popular culture. The compilation was curated to preserve the legacy of an artist who balanced a successful career as an Olympic athlete with a deeply influential life as a singer, actor, and songwriter, capturing the transition of Finnish music from post-war folk ballads to more complex mid-century arrangements.

The collection features tracks spanning three decades, showcasing Rautavaara’s trademark baritone and his evocative storytelling style, which often centered on themes of nature, melancholy, and the Finnish landscape. As an archival project, it was designed to appeal to both long-time listeners of the 'iskelmä' genre and newer generations interested in the historical evolution of Finnish national identity through music, receiving recognition for its thorough documentation of Rautavaara’s recording output during the zenith of his popularity.
