Where it came from
Released in 2011 on the BFM Jazz label, Twin Bill: Two Piano Music Of Bill Evans features jazz pianist Alan Pasqua paying homage to the influential work of Bill Evans. The album serves as an introspective exploration of the Evans catalog, utilizing a unique overdubbing technique where Pasqua performs both parts of Evans' iconic two-piano arrangements. This project reflects Pasqua's deep technical respect for the harmonic complexity that defined Evans' career, translating the intimate interplay usually reserved for two performers into a solitary, layered dialogue.
The album was conceived as a scholarly yet soulful tribute to the legacy of the late jazz pianist, capturing the nuanced improvisational language associated with Evans' compositions. Critics noted the project for its restraint and its ability to maintain the fluidity and spontaneous feel of the source material despite the technical constraints of multi-tracking. It is widely considered a significant entry in the canon of jazz tribute recordings, appreciated for its fidelity to the original emotional resonance of pieces like Waltz for Debby and Time Remembered.
