Where it came from
Two Cells In Sevilla; Don Quixote Is Hungry was released in 2018 under the Navona Records label, representing a collaborative effort between the German composer Walter Steffens and his son, the cellist Marec Béla Steffens. The album serves as an exploration of contemporary chamber music, utilizing the cello to evoke the dramatic and often whimsical atmosphere associated with the literary landscapes of Seville and the iconic figure of Don Quixote.
The project reflects Walter Steffens' long-standing interest in musical characterization and thematic narrative, with the compositions designed to highlight the technical range and expressive capabilities of the cello. By pairing the elder Steffens' structural compositions with the performative nuance of his son, the release functions as both a modern classical dialogue and a personal artistic synthesis that emphasizes intimate, melodic storytelling within a minimalist sonic framework.
