Verklärte Nacht / Pierrot Lunaire

This release features two of Arnold Schoenberg’s most influential compositions, representing the transition from late Romanticism to the dawn of atonal expressionism. Verklärte Nacht, composed in 1899, remains a hallmark of post-Wagnerian chromaticism, while Pierrot Lunaire, completed in 1912, fundamentally altered twentieth-century music through its pioneering use of Sprechstimme. These works were captured by the Nash Ensemble under the direction of Pierre-André Valade, maintaining the technical rigor for which the ensemble is internationally recognized.

This recording was produced as a special edition for BBC Music Magazine, intended to provide listeners with a scholarly yet accessible interpretation of Schoenberg's core repertoire. The production aims to highlight the stark contrast between the lush, tonal textures of the earlier string sextet and the jagged, nightmarish clarity of the later song cycle. Critics and musicologists have generally received the Nash Ensemble's performances as authoritative, noting their ability to navigate the complex emotional landscape of both scores with precision and stylistic integrity.
