Where it came from
Released in 1987 on the ASV Digital label, this album serves as a definitive showcase for the virtuosity of clarinetist Emma Johnson. The recording captures her performance of Carl Maria von Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 1, paired with works by Bernhard Henrik Crusell, Giuseppe Tartini, and Claude Debussy, supported by the English Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Yan Pascal Tortelier.
The album was produced during a period when Johnson was establishing herself as a leading voice in classical music following her triumph at the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 1984. The selection of works highlights both the technical brilliance required for the Romantic-era concertos and the nuanced, impressionistic sensitivity demanded by Debussy's compositions, resulting in a recording that was well-received for its clarity and expressive range.
