Where it came from
This 2010 release by the Musical Heritage Society brings together a curated selection of clarinet repertoire, featuring the acclaimed British clarinetist Emma Johnson. The album centers on Carl Maria von Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 1, a cornerstone of the Romantic era that highlights the instrument's virtuosic capabilities, alongside works by Crusell, Tartini, and Debussy. These recordings capture Johnson's signature expressive style, which has been widely praised for its technical precision and tonal warmth since her breakthrough win at the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 1984.
The production relies on collaborative performances with the English Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Yan Pascal Tortelier. The collection serves as an anthology of sorts, showcasing the evolution of clarinet literature from the baroque sensibilities of Tartini to the impressionistic colors of Debussy's Premiere Rhapsodie. It was released to provide listeners with a concentrated survey of Johnson’s interpretative depth, reflecting a period in her career where she was firmly established as one of the world's leading clarinetists and a champion of the instrument's expansive concert repertoire.
