Winterreise

Franz Schubert’s Winterreise, a haunting cycle of twenty-four songs set to poems by Wilhelm Müller, remains a cornerstone of the German Romantic lieder repertoire. Originally composed in 1827 during the final year of Schubert’s life, the work explores themes of alienation, existential longing, and winter’s cold isolation. It has long served as a definitive test of artistic depth for baritones, demanding a delicate balance between technical precision and raw emotional vulnerability.

This 2025 release features the Finnish baritone Aarne Pelkonen alongside pianist Juho Alakärppä, recorded under the Impala label. Their interpretation is characterized by a focused, modern clarity that emphasizes the structural integrity of Schubert’s writing while maintaining the atmospheric weight inherent in the cycle. By revisiting this classic material, the duo seeks to ground the centuries-old narrative in a contemporary aesthetic, aiming for a performance that resonates with both historical reverence and current sensibilities.
