Women's Voices & Songs Of Martin Hennessy

Released in 1998 on the Newport Classic label, this recording serves as a bridge between the established American art song tradition and contemporary compositions of the late twentieth century. It was produced to highlight the vocal works of Martin Hennessy, providing a platform for his melodic sensibilities alongside the esteemed work of Ned Rorem, a pivotal figure in American classical music known for his prolific output in the genre of song.

The album features soprano Heidi Skok, whose performance was intended to capture the nuance and emotional intimacy characteristic of the art song form. The project emerged from a desire to document the collaborative synergy between a modern composer and an interpreter, aiming to preserve the subtle interplay between text and melody that defines the classical recital tradition. The release was received as a contribution to the contemporary repertoire, reflecting the technical rigor and expressive depth sought by Newport Classic during this period.
