Where it came from
Released in 2006, Women of a Certain Age is an independent project by Karen Kantor and Margaret Dorn. The album emerged from the vibrant cabaret and vocal performance scene in New York City, where both artists were established figures. Produced without the backing of a major label, the collection serves as a personal and reflective exploration of mid-life experiences, blending jazz-inflected pop with vocal harmonies that draw on the performers' extensive backgrounds in studio session work and theatrical performance.
The album's design and conceptual direction were driven by the artists' desire to showcase their versatility as both songwriters and interpreters. Eschewing the conventional constraints of commercial radio, Kantor and Dorn crafted a suite of songs that prioritize lyricism and vocal texture. While the record remained an niche independent release, it was well-received within the artists' immediate professional circles as a sophisticated showcase of their collaborative chemistry and mature artistic perspectives.
