1 Cash (Kaiyuan Tongbao imitation)

The Kaiyuan Tongbao, originally minted in Tang Dynasty China starting in 621, revolutionized East Asian coinage by abandoning the traditional weight-based denomination system in favor of a fixed nominal value. This transition from the older Ban Liang and Wu Zhu coins established a standardized currency model that persisted for centuries, emphasizing administrative consistency and the authority of the central state.

As Chinese influence expanded along the Silk Road, local imitations of the Kaiyuan Tongbao appeared in regions such as Badakhshan. These regional issues were produced to facilitate trade and honor the prestige of the Tang coinage system, which served as a reliable medium of exchange for merchants traveling between East Asia and Central Asia. While these imitations often feature variations in calligraphic style and metallurgical composition compared to the official metropolitan issues, they underscore the profound impact of Tang economic policy on the trans-continental trade networks of the seventh century.
