1 Cash (Two runic signs; Semirechye)

This 1 Cash coin originates from the Semirechye region, a historical area spanning parts of modern-day Kyrgyzstan and southeastern Kazakhstan. Struck around 601 CE, it serves as a tangible artifact of the complex trade networks established during the height of the Western Turkic Khaganate. At this time, the region acted as a critical crossroads for the Silk Road, necessitating a localized currency to facilitate the exchange of goods between nomadic tribes and sedentary merchants.

The design is characterized by two distinct runic signs, reflecting the influence of the Orkhon script or similar early Turkic epigraphy used by the Göktürks. Unlike the standardized coinage of contemporary empires such as the Tang Dynasty, these pieces were often cast in copper or bronze alloys using sand-mold techniques. They were designed for utility within regional markets rather than state propaganda, representing a practical adaptation of nomadic administrative traditions to meet the evolving monetary needs of a multicultural frontier.
