Where it came from
The Wang Mang 1 Cash coin, specifically the 'Huo Quan' issue, was minted during the short-lived Xin Dynasty around 14 CE as part of the usurper emperor's fifth monetary reform. Wang Mang initiated radical economic changes, attempting to standardize the currency by abolishing the traditional Wu Zhu coins and introducing a complex, multi-tiered system of spade, knife, and round coins that were frequently adjusted to cope with economic instability.
The design of the Huo Quan coin is noted for its high-quality calligraphy and technical craftsmanship, featuring the inscription 'Huo Quan'—meaning 'currency' or 'wealth'—in a refined seal script. Despite the aesthetic success of the design, the coin was produced during a period of intense political upheaval and fiscal crisis, leading to widespread public distrust in the government's economic experiments and ultimately contributing to the collapse of the Xin Dynasty.
