Where it came from
The Australian one-cent coin was originally introduced in 1966 during the transition to decimal currency, featuring the iconic feather-tailed glider design by Stuart Devlin. By 2011, the coin had long been withdrawn from general circulation due to its production cost exceeding its face value, meaning the 2011 proof issue was minted exclusively for collectors as part of commemorative sets rather than for daily commerce.
This particular issue features the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. Introduced in Australia in 1999, this effigy replaced the previous version by Raphael Maklouf to provide a more mature and realistic depiction of the monarch. The silver proof version is highly regarded by numismatists for its high-relief strike and mirror-like finish, which highlights the meticulous detail of both the sovereign's portrait and Devlin’s classic reverse artwork.
