Where it came from
The 2022 Canadian one-cent coin occupies a unique historical position as a commemorative release marking the final year of the denomination's production. While Canada officially discontinued the penny for general circulation in 2013, the Royal Canadian Mint periodically issues special editions for collectors. This 2022 release serves as a poignant conclusion to the coin's legacy, honoring the long reign of Queen Elizabeth II in the year of her Platinum Jubilee and preceding her passing later that autumn.
The design features the classic maple leaf motif on the reverse, a symbol long associated with Canadian numismatics, paired with the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. Designed by Susanna Blunt, the portrait reflects the maturity and grace of the monarch, consistent with the standard coinage effigies used throughout the Commonwealth during the later years of her reign. The piece was received by collectors as a significant historical marker, serving as both a tribute to the Queen and a final retrospective on the role of the penny in Canadian economic history.
