Where it came from
The 1911 Canadian one-cent piece is famously known among numismatists as the 'Godless' penny. It was minted during a transitional period following the death of King Edward VII, when the Royal Mint in London failed to include the traditional Latin abbreviation 'DEI GRA'—standing for 'Dei Gratia' or 'By the Grace of God'—in the obverse legend. The omission caused immediate public scandal in Canada, as religious leaders and the press felt the removal of the reference to God was an affront to the monarchy and the Christian values of the era.
Designed by Sir E.B. Mackennal, the obverse features the effigy of King George V. The error was rectified in subsequent issues starting in 1912, when the full Latin legend was restored. Because of the swift public outcry and the subsequent correction, the 1911 issue stands as a unique curiosity in the Canadian decimal series. It remains highly sought after not just for its scarcity, but for the story of clerical and political protest that defined its short production run.
