Where it came from
The 1937 Canadian one-cent coin marked a significant transition in Canadian numismatics, debuting shortly after the accession of King George VI to the throne. Following the abdication of Edward VIII, the Royal Canadian Mint commissioned T.H. Paget to create the new monarch's effigy for the obverse, while G.E. Kruger-Gray was tasked with designing the reverse. The reverse features a sprig of maple leaves, an enduring national symbol that replaced the previous vine design.
This specific issue is notable for bearing the Latin inscription ET IND: IMP:, which translates to 'and Emperor of India.' This was a standard inclusion for British Commonwealth coinage of the era, reflecting the monarch's formal title before India gained independence in 1947. The design was widely praised for its balance and clarity, successfully moving away from the more ornate Victorian and Edwardian aesthetics in favor of a clean, modern look that remained a staple of Canadian currency for many years.
