1 Cent (In the name of Edward VII; Small leaves design - 1908)

The 2017 Canadian one-cent coin was issued as part of a commemorative set celebrating the 150th anniversary of Confederation. This specific design honors the 1908 'Small Leaves' large cent, which was the first penny produced at the newly established Ottawa branch of the Royal Mint. By recreating the original Edward VII obverse and the iconic maple wreath reverse, the Royal Mint sought to pay tribute to the historical transition of Canadian coinage production from London to domestic facilities.

The original 1908 design was the work of G.W. De Saulles for the effigy and W.H.J. Blakemore for the reverse elements. The 2017 edition serves as a numismatic bridge, allowing collectors to appreciate the intricate artistry of the Edwardian era. It was received by the public as a nostalgic nod to Canada’s transition toward monetary independence, reinforcing the historical significance of the minting process that defined the early twentieth century.
