Where it came from
The 2024 two-dollar coin, known as a toonie, was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint to commemorate the centennial of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Established on April 1, 1924, the RCAF became an independent service branch, and this coin serves as a tribute to its century of service protecting Canadian sovereignty and contributing to international peacekeeping efforts.
The design was created by illustrator Jason Bouwman, who sought to capture the evolution of Canadian aviation history. The reverse features a montage of six iconic aircraft that have served the force across the decades, ranging from the early Vickers Vedette to the modern F-35 Lightning II. The design was received as a sophisticated piece of numismatic storytelling, reflecting both the technical progression of the fleet and the organization's enduring legacy.
