Where it came from
The 1 Chiao coin was issued by the Meng Chiang Bank, a Japanese-sponsored financial institution established in 1937 during the occupation of Inner Mongolia. These coins were produced in 1943 as part of the currency reform aimed at consolidating Japanese control over the local economy and replacing the various Chinese regional currencies that had previously circulated in the region.
The design of the coin reflects the geopolitical climate of the time, often featuring symbols intended to convey authority and stability within the puppet state. Produced amidst the constraints of wartime resource shortages, the coinage reflects the industrial aesthetic of mid-century Japanese colonial currency, serving as a material testament to a volatile period in East Asian history.
